SharePoint 2010 convert License type
by Shoban • June 30, 2010 • SharePoint 2010 • 5 Comments
SharePoint 2010 is available in 2 versions namely Standard and Enterprise. If you have installed a standard version and want to convert to Enterprise features then you can simply change the license type by
- Opening Central Administration
- Entering the new License Key by Clicking Convert farm license type
Looks Simple.. But wait, Do you see the Textbox disabled?
There is another way to change License type from Standard CAL to Enterprise CAL.
- Open Central Administration
- Navigate to Upgrade and Migration
- Click “Enable Enterprise Features“
- Enter your Enterprise CAL key and Press OK
- Wait for few minutes and enjoy the Enterprise features of SharePoint 2010
Keep in mind there is no turning back here. Once you upgrade to Enterprise version you cannot switch back to Standard version.

tried all options, and nothing worked, I have a subscription with MS and the Enterprise key is legit…
the first option you post is grayed out for me also and I cannot upgrade to enterprise
the second option which is “enable enterprise features” is not grayed out, but does not accept the MS legit key given, it returns a message that says “you cannot upgrade with this key”.???
Not sure if anyone has had this problem or not but this is a complete, legit, MS install and the key is an enterprise key so I don’t know what this is about?
Did you try to contact MS Support?
Hello,
Is it also possible to change the license key through PowerShell?
I installed SharePoint 2010 Standard edition, but the farm i want to connect this WFE to, has Enterprise installed. Is it possible to change the license type without using Central Administration (Since this doesn’t exist when connecting to an existing farm).
Kind regards,
Nico
I am having the same issue (as Claude). any ideas please?
@stazera,
Did you try contacting MS support. Looks like a key issue.
